The addition of blinkers helped promising youngster Sir Moments to a breakthrough victory at Doomben today and now he is heading for much richer targets.

Sir Moments ($2.40) overcame traffic problems early in the straight to power home for a half length win over pacemaker El Toranado ($21) in the Bulmers Dalrello Stakes (1200m).

At his previous start Sir Moments was buried in the ruck at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago and trainer Steve O’Dea reasoned the blinkers might aid his concentration.

“I was worried when he was buried away midfield on the fence and he did get bashed up a bit trying to work into the clear. In the end it was a good win,’’ O’Dea said.

“I can’t wait to get him to longer races on the bigger track at Eagle Farm.’’

That scenario will come next start with SAir Moments to run next in The Phoenix over 1400 metres in a fortnight.

From there O’Dea is confident Sir Moments will have earned his chance in the Group 1 J J Atkins (1600m) on June 8.

Rider  Michael Cahill also gave Sir Moments a good wrap.

“I came up to Eagle Farm to gallop him on Tuesday and he went as good as any two-year-old I’ve ridden,’’ Cahill said.

“He can definitely get better on what he showed us today. A longer distance will suit him for sure.’’
